PRAYERS, the first release from Moomaw/Gravid Wives collaboration Physical Release, balances moments of brutality with an earnest pursuit of beauty, moving from washes of noise and bass heavy rhythms in to dense lyricism and hidden hooks. Born from a cold winter tour of the States in 2010, the album is the result of six weeks re-imagining old songs and discovering new ones during performances that relied largely on improvisation, followed by another six weeks holed up in a friend’s loft in Los Angeles writing and recording. Much of the music on this record began as long explorations of new equipment and sounds while Jackson and Dobbratz learned to play and write together. From these pieces songs developed through a process of reverse- engineering and editing, in a sculptural process that, while essentially still pop, proved to be a liberating shift from more traditional linear composition and form.

Here we are. About to Physically Release and you may not have even been privy to the entanglement. It’s been making love to you from a distance.

“PRAYERS,” grooved plastic (or a digital duplication of representational bits) forming “washes of noise and bass heavy rhythms in to dense lyricism and hidden hooks,” for the purpose of what may be “pop” or perhaps just fringing “experimental” can get inside of you. I hate to inform you of such a privacy breech, but as mentioned above, it is already inside you.

The album is being released by Gazebo Music on Tuesday April 24, but you can stream the whole thing for free here (and on Tuesday you can purchase a digital copy at this location as well):

This is all quite on the heels of a wonderful festival in the woods of the Russian River. C.A.M.P. is a whole bunch of artists and lovelies making super a weekend in Guerneville.

I will be playing as a new member of Winnie Byrd on Sunday and enjoying all the other bands and activities in the meantime. YOu bet!
