Outta Sight July 16th, 2008

Outta Sight
Wed July 16th - 9pm
@ The Edinburgh Castle (950 Geary St)
featuring:
Coloring
Ruthann Friedman
Helene Renaut

Coloring will be playing at this coming Outta Sight show and sharing the stage with two lovely songstresses. We are pleased to present Ruthann Friedman, a wonderful songwriter who has been involved with the folk scene since the start in the 60s. Most notably, she wrote the song “Windy”, as popularized by The Association, but all of her songs stand to teach what folk music really is. Helene Renaut, who has graced the Outta Sight stage before, will also be playing her lovely and unique style of French-tinged folk pop that will draw sunsets on the inside of your eyelids. And Coloring will be bringing our usual blend of country and psych, playing some new tunes as well.

Gazebo Music now features a brand new podcast from Homesick Elephant. The lovely duo came through San Francisco during tour and I was able to play the wonderful July 4th Fort Gallery Folk Fest with them. The next morning we got brunch together and then came back to my apartment to record the first in a series of Gazebo Sessions. These sessions will feature local and touring bands of influence in the like-minded music community. Just as Homesick Elephant did, the bands will come over to my house and casually chat and play music into a single recording source. I am quite happy with how well this first episode came out and I highly encourage everyone to take a chance to check it out:

In other news, you can finally buy my album from InSound. It’s great, so you should go there and buy it now!

And a heads up to those people in Sweden. I’m coming over there to share your sunny summer solstice nights this week and I’m playing a show at the end of next week. Here’s the details:

Airwave Talkie Box

Tomorrow evening I will be interviewed on a wonderful radio show called “Sprout and the Bean” on WLFM in Wisconsin. The show starts at 8:30pm Central Time. Some wonderful verbatim information straight from the host of the show about the station:

“The radio-station’s main claim to fame is hosting the “Great Midwestern Trivia Contest” which is a 50 hour non-stop trivia contest that happens every January where people keep themselves up with caffeine or other aids and participate in this contest that has been around since the 60’s. Since the internet the questions have become a lot harder since people can easily use the internet to find the answer to traditional questions. At the end there are “super” questions that are really intense like: In Washington D.C. what is graffitied onto the dumpster next to the Starbucks on Grant and Berring. This kind of question could only be successfully answered if someone knew a person in Washington D.C. who could go to that intersection and see exactly what is graffitied onto the dumpster within the time-limit. So it’s a crazy trivia contest and people make teams all over the world. It is the longest running trivia contest anywhere!”

Pretty groovy stuff. In a similar radio vein, I had a blast guest DJing at KUSF this past Friday. Upon review of the tracks I played, I realized anyone tuning in would most likely have thought they were listening to a new classic rock radio station, but alas, I had fun.

In other radio related news, I am happy to say that “26″ is getting some decent airtime and is charting in the CMJ top 200 albums right now! It comes out in a mere week.

Far out new videos, live recordings and other things

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Just getting settled back to life after being on the road for a bit. It really was a great time and I can only pretend that this computer is a steering wheel, driving about this country in a hungover haze with Miwa, James and Howard, trying our hand at local radio stations or blasting the “Southern Rock” CD that Howard bought due to his disenchantment with radio jams.

When I got home I got to be part of a wonderful show called Phoning It In. They basically call up artists around the country and have they play live over the phone, broadcasting the result live on the radio (BSR 88.1FM Providence [bsrlive.com] and 88.1FM Cambridge [wmbr.org]). It was a whole lot of fun, awkward talk from me and all! Please take a listen to the show here:

Moomaw on Phoning It In

Also, in a similar “radio show” vein, Miwa and I played on KPSU’s Irregular Frequencies show in Portland. Vincent Caldoni was kind enough to take video of our sets and posted them on Youtube. Below is one song embedded and there are links to the other songs as well. Check out the giant orange foamy mic!
