tour recapitulation

It’s been about a week now since I got back from the easterly coast. I’ve settled back into my San Francisco reality, shaken off the the traveling bugs, started to flush the red wine out of my system and let the passings of the trip sink in. Come, join me in my rambling recapitulation of the events that ensued. Hop in my little wagon and I’ll pull you…

I met Miwa in cold New York. I should have packed a lighter suitcase still. Anyway, we drove our sweet sweet rented Chevy Malibu south shortly after, making headway for the next day.
We pulled into Chapel Hill the next afternoon. My first time there. Seemed cool except for the fact that it was obvious everyone in town was leaving for spring break that day. We played at The Cave, a cute little underground bar downtown somewhere. It was a good warm-up show without many people. My uncle and cousin-in-law came. A few other folks came. It looked kinda like this:

We stayed with my cousin outside of Chapel Hill and I got to see my new(ish) second cousin for the first time. It was great to see family. NC was nice and alot warmer than SF and NYC are right now. Played guitar out on a porch with birds singing. The next stop was Savannah, which was actually relatively hot. We stayed with 2 amazing artists: Stephen Kennedy and Irene McCollam. They showed us quite a time. We rollicked around Savannah, plastic cups in hand, enjoying the wonderful surroundings. We went the cemetery and Stephen and I got chased by bees! I ran about 5 avenue blocks before diving into a pile of sand and rolling around. And that little sucker was with me right until the end! We also got to visit the studio of another great artist, Scott Griffin. The pics of the trucks and the crazy milk vat(?) isolation chamber thingie were taken at his studio on a dairy. Our show at The Sentient Bean was pretty good. There’s some pretty good pictures from that as well.

Athens was next. Also great weather. We played at The Flicker with a great band called Ham1. It was a fun show, wrapped up with a ukulele-driven acoustic cover of the Clash’s “White Riot” by Ham1. That night we stayed with the lovely Andy Baker. Miwa played more piano. ‘Twas nice.

The next day we drove into the hills of Asheville, NC. We played a house show at a place called Mount Olympus and it was quite nice. A bunch of kids came out and just watched us play. How can you ask for anything more than that? We met up with friends of Miwa’s and stayed with the very hospitable Susan and Jeff.

The next day was just a giant, rainy drive from Asheville into NYC. I was happy to catch up with a bunch of friends when I got to the city (oh.. Dave and Nat). It started snowing shortly after we arrived. I’m not sure how much it snowed, but it was a decent amount and it stuck around. We played another house show at a place called LoriMar (Under the Sea) in Williamsburg. It was a really good time (with some craziness). It was hot, humid and drunk in that thar basement, fer sher. We played with Dream Bitches, June to July and Creaky Boards. Great music, much fun.

Our final show of this little jaunt was in Boston on St. Patrick’s Day. We played at PA’s Lounge in Somerville with Chop Chop. Catherine from Chop Chop played a wonderful solo set (just her, her guitar and her drum machines). My folks came out and it was great to see them. Miwa brought along her James of (Condo and The Rakehells). We stayed with an old friend of mine, Chris “Twitchy Droid Leg” Leamy.

All and all, quite a far out time. Seeing friends and family, hanging out with Miwa, playing music, seeing Spanish moss and snow shortly after one another. I know I forgot things and people…
